Nvidia calms the AI industry with a reassuring report

The AI industry is built like a house of cards: Each company’s success relies on the financial strength of all the others. With its powerful AI chips, Nvidia might as well be the cornerstone, holding the rest of the field on its shoulders.

So there was a lot riding on Wednesday night’s earnings report: No matter the outcome, Nvidia knew the effects would likely cascade through the rest of the tech industry, and potentially even the wider economy.

Here’s what happened:

  • Analysts had expected Nvidia to more than double its revenue in Q2, while anything short of that would have been cause for concern

  • It also needed to project that it’d bring in even more revenue this quarter

  • It exceeded both of those benchmarks — in fact, its revenue rose by 122% — reassuring investors that AI is still a safe bet, at least for now

Why is Nvidia so dominant? It designs around 90% of the world’s AI chips, and it also builds the software needed to operate those state-of-the-art GPUs. Other companies like AMD and Intel are trying to catch up, but Nvidia has a big head start — and keeps beating rivals to the punch with new releases.

Why the results matter: Investors have poured funding into AI companies over the past few years, but they’re starting to worry about whether firms can turn those investments into sustainable revenue.

For its part, Nvidia wants to show it still has room to grow, and that its success is built not on AI hype — but on the strength of its products. Its latest earnings report argues that pretty convincingly — and other AI companies are likely rejoicing, knowing that the AI bubble hasn’t burst just yet.

FROM THE FRONTIER

A new AI gadget does one thing well

Source: Plaud

A new AI wearable from SF-based startup Plaud doesn’t want to be a jack-of-all-trades. Instead of tackling everything at once, the small, capsule-shaped NotePin does only a few things — but does each of them well.

Here are the details:

  • You can tap the device to record a conversation, meeting, or lecture, with a 20-hour battery life

  • You’ll be able to receive transcriptions and summaries of your recordings; then, you can transform them into bulleted lists, slideshows, or emails

  • Plaud has a solid track record: Its Note, which pairs with your phone, is one of the few pieces of AI hardware that’s been well-received by critics

  • The NotePin is already available for preorder and will start shipping within the next few weeks

  • Entering the Ring: IBM developed a new AI-enabled chip as it looks to keep up with Nvidia, AMD, and Intel.

  • AI Secretary: Gemini can now take notes on your behalf during Meet calls, providing a summary of what each person said.

  • Idea Incubator: Anthropic is opening up access to Claude’s new Artifacts feature, which lets you experiment with different prompts and save them for later use.

  • Ways of Seeing: Meta is reportedly developing a “mixed-reality” device that would be bulkier than smart glasses but sleeker than a traditional headset.

🎮 One Fun Thing: Researchers have built an AI model that can generate a video game in real-time. Based on the 1993 FPS “Doom,” the model uses its training data to create new frames as a player navigates through each level. It may be the first video game created entirely with a neural network — and without a traditional game engine.

🍲 Food for Thought: The next time you spot a box of Kraft mac-and-cheese at the supermarket, keep in mind that AI might have helped get it to you on time. Kraft Heinz says it has introduced an AI-powered software that can quickly spot customer trends and suggest last-minute supply chain adjustments. It’s able to juggle data from 200 brands, including Jell-O, Lunchables, and Kool-Aid.
