As the old adage goes, one person’s pain is another’s pleasure. Last week, OpenAI reportedly rushed to plug a leak that gave some users early access to the full version of o1. In that two-hour window, we got what may be our first glimpse at what’s next for the company.

TODAY IN AI

More Apple Intelligence features are expected during the first week of December. Source: Apple

1. A sneak peek at the AI features coming to iOS: Apple just dropped a beta version of iOS 18.2, with the full release slated for the first week of December. It’ll let you upgrade to ChatGPT Plus directly in your iPhone’s Settings, giving you access to advanced voice mode. Custom emojis and image generations are expected as well. Finally, “Find My” is getting a boost, letting you send a link to a third-party so they can help search for your device.

2. These computer scientists are teaching AI how to be a better student: Researchers at the University of California San Diego and Tsinghua University helped an LLM recognize when it might need some outside advice — instead of relying on its internal knowledge base alone. Inspired by the “human problem-solving process,” their method boosted accuracy by 28%, beating out GPT-4o and Claude 3.5.

3. Apple smart glasses could be in the works: Apple may soon have an answer to Meta’s Ray Ban smart glasses. The iPhone maker is allegedly conducting top-secret surveys within its own ranks to see if there’s interest in glasses that can interact with Siri, take videos, and make calls. In the meantime, a more affordable, scaled-down version of the futuristic Vision Pro headset could come as soon as next year.

FROM THE FRONTIER

Oops: Users glimpse full version of o1 before official release

Source: Kol Tregaskes/X

Eagle-eyed ChatGPT users stumbled on a happy accident last week. By tweaking ChatGPT’s URL, they managed to access what appears to be the full version of o1, which was supposed to be kept under wraps until its rumored release later this year.

OpenAI quickly patched the leak: But in the brief two-hour window when o1 was live, users raced to test out its capabilities. Like its predecessor, it thinks through big problems by breaking them down into smaller steps. But while o1-preview is limited to text, the full version will be able to handle images, documents, and audio while scanning the internet for the latest information.

The most tantalizing tidbit: For o1-preview, OpenAI is rumored to have slapped its reasoning capabilities onto GPT-4. Meanwhile, the full release was reportedly built from the ground up to focus on higher-level tasks; it could be the biggest leap yet toward AGI.
