Welcome back, Superhuman

The restless brainiacs at OpenAI headquarters are back at it again, as new reports confirm that the company is working on a new AI image detector. But will it fare any better than its previously failed attempt to launch an AI-generated text detector?

Today’s issue also has a quick tutorial on how to use ChatGPT with Excel. But it’s not all work — we’ve got a Friday laugh to kickstart your weekend at the end.

OpenAI debates when to release its AI image detector

Tom Cruise, Barack Obama, and Tom Hanks are just a few of the famous people who have seen AI-generated deepfakes with their faces go viral this past year.

But it’s not just politicians and movie stars who should be worried about AI-generated images. Ordinary people like us could see ourselves becoming the target of a deepfake attack, whether it’s in the shape of undesirable images with our faces, or an attack from a scammer or foreign government trying to deceive us with misleading images.

According to recent reports emerging this week, OpenAI is debating if and when to release their AI-generated image detector. A tool like this could in theory help people, businesses, and governments guard against the scenarios mentioned above.

But OpenAI isn’t quite sure yet. According to their CTO Mira Murati, the tool is 99% reliable, but the company doesn’t feel like it’s hit their required threshold yet.

OpenAI’s reluctance could stem from the criticism it received for its past release of an AI-generated writing detector, which was eventually taken down after reports of low accuracy emerged.

It’s also unclear at present whether the detector will work only for images generated with OpenAI’s image models, or other AI models as well. All we know for now is that such a tool is in the works and could be released in the future.

3 ways to use ChatGPT with Excel

ChatGPT isn’t just good for spitting out college essays and blogs. With Advanced Data Analysis mode, you can also analyze spreadsheets within ChatGPT, or use it in combination with Excel or Google Sheets.

Automate or simplify data entry and cleaning

Data cleaning and entry can be a tedious process that can sometimes take hours of your week. With Data Analysis Mode on ChatGPT, you can clean or format data and export it as a new file to use in Excel in minutes. Use cases include:

  • Removing duplicates

  • Standardizing formats like dates and currencies

  • Finding and replacing or deleting missing values

Complex analysis with simple language

Most jobs that require Excel as a skill also require data analysis chops to identify trends and insights. Sometimes this can be as simple as building a pivot chart. But often this can require complex formulas, macros, or knowledge of VBA.

With Advanced Data Analysis mode, you can upload multiple spreadsheets simultaneously and ask it to run complex analyses with simple language. Use cases include:

  • Identifying trends across time or product segments

  • Analyzing customer feedback to generate insights like NPS scores and sentiment analyses

  • Running diagnostic analyses to find exactly when a positive or negative trend emerges

  • Predicting future trends like customer churn based on past data

Generate complex visualizations and dashboards

Turning data into easily digestible visualizations is one of the most important data analysis skills. Unfortunately, some visualizations are either too complex or impossible to generate in Excel and Sheets.

For complex charts, visualizations and dashboards, upload a spreadsheet and ask Advanced Data Analysis mode to generate a number of insight-packed visualizations like:

  • Heat maps

  • Network graphs

  • Violin plots

  • Boxplots

  • And other types of basic visualizations like bar graphs and trend charts.
