Welcome back, Superhuman

As AI models get smaller and smaller, the supercomputers used to train them are only getting more massive. Elon Musk’s new ‘Colossus’ is just the latest example. Find out how its record-shattering scale could help push the field forward.

World’s ‘most powerful’ AI supercomputer gets to work

What happens if you string together 100,000 of Nvidia’s state-of-the-art AI chips? Elon Musk’s xAI is about to find out. Musk says his AI startup built a record-setting, Nvidia-powered supercomputer in just 122 days — a feat of engineering that could redefine the frontiers of AI. Now, the Memphis-based Colossus — considered the largest GPU supercomputer in the world — is online and ready to work.

Why does size matter in the world of AI?

  • Supercomputers are like the gyms where AI models train, bulking up on data to become smarter and more capable

  • Generally, the more processing power, the more complex an LLM can become

  • Launched in 2023, xAI is a relative newcomer

  • But with plans to double Colossus's size in months (with 50,000 next-gen H-200s), it isn’t just entering the race — it’s trying to lap the competition

  • It’ll likely be used to train Grok-3, which could become the world’s next state-of-the-art model thanks to Colossus

Why it matters: In the AI industry, more compute means more power. That explains why each of the major players is sprinting to get their hands on as many Nvidia chips as possible, paying as much as $40,000 for each.

But collecting a war chest of chips is only half the battle: Designing and building the infrastructure to use them all at once is an entirely different story. Meta, for instance, is trying to gather as many as 600,000 chips for future projects. But it reportedly used just 16,000 to train the largest version of Llama 3. Whether it's developing more sophisticated language models or tackling complex scientific problems, the race for computational supremacy is far from over.

How to create expense reports using ChatGPT

  • Go to ChatGPT and log in with your account.

  • Make sure you choose GPT-4o as your model.

  • Now upload images of all your receipts and ask ChatGPT to analyze and convert them into an expense report.

  • Use the prompt: “Analyze all uploaded receipts and create an expense report based on these receipts. Record the data in a table, including date, merchant name, and amount, categorize these expenses by type, and then calculate the total expense.”

  • You can convert this report into a PDF or a CSV file to download it.

OpenAI Japan CEO teases next model

Source: ITmedia

The CEO of OpenAI Japan just hinted at some new details about the startup’s next big release. At a business summit in Tokyo, Tadao Nagasaki shared a graph of the company’s trajectory. In the 2024 slot, there’s a mysterious model called “GPT Next,” suggesting we’ll see a major update by the end of the year. It’s expected to be about 100 times more powerful than GPT-4.

Analysts think it’ll be trained with a mini version of Strawberry, which will make it much better at multi-step reasoning. Meanwhile, a full-fledged release codenamed Orion (aka GPT-5) — the one OpenAI has already shared with government officials — will likely come sometime next year, or even later.
