OpenAI releases GPT-4.1
ALSO: How to add objects to images with ChatGPT

Welcome back, Superhuman. AI is great at helping scientists make new discoveries. But what if an AI learned how to think like a scientist and make new discoveries on its own? OpenAI is reportedly set to release a new model this week that does exactly that. But it’s going to come at an eye-popping price.

TODAY IN AI
1. OpenAI rolls out new GPT-4.1 model: The new model is available in API only and can process up to 1M tokens (roughly 3,500 pages of text), surpassing GPT-4o's 128,000-token limit at a fraction of the cost. It offers improved performance in "coding, instruction following, and long context". OpenAI also launched GPT-4.1 Mini and its first-ever Nano model — the latter being their "smallest, fastest, and cheapest" model yet. This comes as the company phases out GPT-4.5 from its API and pushes the timeline on GPT-5 past its expected May launch.
2. Nvidia plans massive $500B AI manufacturing push on US soil: The chip giant announced it has already kicked off production of its latest Blackwell AI chips at TSMC's Phoenix plant and is building supercomputer manufacturing facilities in Texas with Foxconn and Wistron. The $500B figure represents the total value of AI gear Nvidia expects to sell through 2029, largely fueled by cloud giants like Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta, who are projected to spend $371B on AI facilities this year alone.
3. Google’s new foundational model lets you talk to dolphins: DolphinGemma, an AI trained on decades of underwater recordings, can spot patterns in dolphin sounds, using them to generate realistic dolphin-like vocalizations. Using Pixel phones equipped with CHAT (Cetacean Hearing Augmentation Telemetry), researchers can potentially establish two-way communication by associating synthetic whistles with objects dolphins enjoy. It opens the door to humans potentially being able to communicate with other intelligent animal species. You can watch it in action here.

FROM THE FRONTIER
Report claims OpenAI set to launch new AI models that could cost as much as $20,000 per month

AI is great at solving problems — but terrible at asking the right questions or coming up with new ideas. That may be about to change. According to a report from The Information, OpenAI is set to release new AI models that can generate new ideas.
This is a huge deal. According to Oxford physicist David Deutsch, human progress is fundamentally driven by our ability to create new explanatory knowledge. An AI that could create new scientific ideas would represent an extension of what Deutsch calls "universal explainers" — entities capable of creating knowledge that can, in principle, explain anything explainable and accelerate human progress.
Why it matters: These models can reportedly cross-pollinate ideas from physics, biology, chemistry, and engineering — something even human researchers struggle with. Early testers have reportedly suggested that these models can be used to develop new methods for detecting pathogens in wastewater and designing precision-controlled plastic recycling experiments.
It’ll cost you a pretty penny. The report claims that OpenAI will name the models o3 and o4-mini, and may charge as much as $20,000/month for enterprise subscriptions. The models may be released as soon as this week.

How to add objects to images with ChatGPT

Go to ChatGPT and select GPT-4o as your model.
Now create a base image to add objects or elements later on.
Sample Prompt: create a cinematic top-down shot of a valley in the desert
Once your base image is ready, upload an image of the object you'd like to include.
Sample Prompt: [upload object image] add this image to the existing image, don’t change anything
That’s it! You can seamlessly add any object to any scene using this simple method.
