Microsoft and Nvidia push the frontier with the latest models

Tech giants Nvidia and Microsoft aren’t just playing the GPU and cloud game when it comes to AI. Both companies are now stepping into the arena to unveil leaner and meaner models that pack a punch.

Microsoft unveiled Phi-3.5, which includes three new models:

  • There’s the 42B parameter MoE-instruct for more complicated tasks, the 3.82B parameter mini-instruct for speed and efficiency, and a vision-instruct model that’s geared toward images and videos

  • Each reach state-of-the-art performance across multiple benchmarks, rivaling Gemini 1.5 Flash and approaching OpenAI’s GPT-4o on certain tests

Nvidia showed off its new Mistral-NeMo-Minitron 8B model:

  • It’s an update of the 12B version it released with Mistral AI last month

  • In order to create a smaller model, Nvidia “pruned” out unnecessary model weights, then retrained the LLM with accuracy in mind

  • Its tiny size makes it highly customizable for specific uses, like phone apps and customer service chatbots

Think small. These new models manage to boost speed and efficiency without sacrificing accuracy — Nvidia’s 8B model is reportedly just as precise as its bigger 12B sibling, but with up to 40x less compute cost. As AI companies grapple with energy consumption and costs, these compact form factors could soon become just as important as model capabilities.

FROM THE FRONTIER

OpenAI will now let developers tweak GPT-4o

Source: OpenAI

While software engineers at big tech firms have access to the latest and greatest models, independent developers often have to work with watered-down, open-source alternatives. That’s no longer the case — as OpenAI just announced it’s opening up access to GPT-4o.

With fine-tuning, engineers can push models to their limits and tweak them to match their needs, boosting accuracy and efficiency. Customized versions of GPT-4o — for example, ones that specialize in math or coding — could soon top industry benchmarks and set new records. To celebrate the new customization features, OpenAI will offer organizations 1M training tokens per day at no cost through September 23.

  • Giving Back: ElevenLabs is working with nonprofits to give 1 million people access to its AI voice preservation tools, starting with patients with ALS and other motor neuron diseases.

  • Bottom Line: A new Gemini-powered tool will let you “polish” email drafts before sending them out.

  • Cashing In: SF-based startup Story has raised $80M to help companies monetize their data in the age of AI.

  • Digital Debut: The web version of Midjourney is now available to all users. Previously, newcomers could only access the platform via Discord.

😄 One Fun Thing: A startup called BeyondMath is using AI to build F1 race cars that are more aerodynamic. Its new “digital wind tunnel” lets manufacturers simulate how their cars will perform across different weather conditions, speeding up experiments that once took weeks to carry out.

💭 In Your Dreams: Luma just gave its text-to-video platform a massive upgrade. The new Dream Machine 1.5 has improved realism, motion tracking, and prompt understanding. It’s also much better at recreating text — something that’s notoriously difficult for video models to do.

🧠 Brain Food: A startup called Piramidal announced it raised $6M to build a novel AI model that can interpret and analyze brain waves. It could one day aid in diagnosing brain diseases, alleviating the nationwide shortage of neurologists in the US.

Midjourney Prompt: A vintage-style travel poster of Santa Maria, Azores, with the island's lush greenery and blue waters in full view, featuring the text "SANTA MARIA, AZORES" at the top. The artwork is characterized by its bold lines, flat colors, and geometric shapes, reminiscent of mid-century advertising posters. It uses a limited color palette to highlight key elements like the bird-of-paradise flower or mountains, creating an iconic look that captures the essence of retro vacation marketing.
