NEXT IN AI

OpenAI’s Strawberry could come in less than two weeks

The wait may soon be over. It’s been nearly a year since we first heard rumblings of a mysterious new offering from OpenAI that’s capable of high-level reasoning. Now, The Information has reported that the project, code-named Strawberry, could be unveiled as soon as next week — much sooner than expected.

Will it be the first AI tool to truly show signs of human-level intelligence — or just an incremental step forward? Let’s dive in:

  • At first, Strawberry will allegedly be integrated into ChatGPT, allowing users to toggle it off and off depending on the complexity of their prompt

  • It’ll take between 10 and 20 seconds to “think” through high-level problems

  • Usage may be limited at first, but premium subscribers could pay for access to a faster, unlimited version

  • It’ll only be able to handle text for now, with multimodal capabilities coming at a later date

What will it be capable of? It’s said to be more accurate, since it breaks problems down into individual steps, catching its own errors in the process. It’ll offer more comprehensive, specific responses to brainstorming and business prompts, but it may also be able to solve math problems it’s never seen before — suggesting some level of “understanding” of mathematical principles.

Will it live up to the hype? It’s hard to say. Early testers admitted they’d sometimes opted for the standard GPT-4o for simpler prompts, since it’s much speedier. But this initial release might just be the first taste of Stawberry’s problem-solving capabilities. OpenAI could be saving its biggest advancements for its next flagship model — be it GPT-5 or something entirely new.

FROM THE FRONTIER

Open-source biology startup uses AI to discover new drugs

Source: Chai Discovery

Riding on the success of DeepMind’s AlphaFold and EvolutionaryScale’s ESM3, a new biology-based AI model is putting on its lab goggles and getting down to work.

The details:

  • Meta and OpenAI alum Joshua Meier co-founded Chai Discovery in March

  • This week, the startup unveiled Chai-1, a model that’s between 10% and 20% more accurate than its rivals

  • Just as enticing, it’s open-source, so researchers have full access to it from day one

  • With $30M in new funding from OpenAI and Thrive Capital, Chai is now valued at $150M

Why it’s important: Biologists once had to find the shapes and relationships between various proteins and molecules through trial and error — a tedious process that took lots of time and money. Platforms like Chai can speed up and automate the process, identifying compounds that could one day treat everything from cancer to Alzheimer’s.
