Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang just popped his company’s latest invention out of the oven. “I think I might have cooked it a little too long — it shrunk!” he joked. Turns out, the chipmaker’s latest AI supercomputer is nearly pocket-sized — so small, in fact, it can fit in the palm of your hand.

1. OpenAI starts opening up access to o1: The startup’s latest reasoning model uses 60% fewer tokens than its predecessor, and it features new fine-tuning methods that give coders a greater level of control over their GPTs. It’s also releasing new software development kits that make its GPTs compatible with languages like Java, cutting down on as much as 250 lines of code. Developers can expect to get access to o1 within the next few weeks.

2. Character AI’s biggest rival pivots to video: Chinese-made chatbot platform Talkie took the US by storm earlier this year, at one point becoming the fourth-most downloaded AI app in the nation. Similar to Character AI, it lets you “talk” to virtual replicas of celebrities like Taylor Swift or LeBron James — or build your own from scratch. Now, parent company MiniMax may be plotting a return with a suite of new video features. While details are scant, you’d presumably be able to not only chat with your AI companion via text but have video calls with them, too.

3. iRobot founder raises funds for AI-powered “furry pets”: As the former CEO of Roomba-maker iRobot, Colin Angle helped introduce the world to some of the first home robots. Now, he’s reportedly stepping beyond robo-vacuums and entering the health and wellness industry. Reports suggest Angle’s new startup, Familiar Machines, wants to raise $30M to build the AI equivalent of a cuddly emotional support animal. The household robotics market is expected to soar to $24.5B by 2028.

Nvidia reveals supercomputer that fits in your hand

Out of all the hobbies you could take up next year, AI engineering might not be at the top of your list. That’s because the computers needed to run advanced models aren’t widely available — and only a select few startups can get their hands on them.

But Nvidia just unveiled a palm-sized supercomputer that could significantly lower the barrier to entry. The Jetson Orin Nano Super Developer Kit delivers a 70% performance boost compared to its predecessor, plus a 1.7 times jump in inference speeds — or the time it takes to analyze new data.
