Meta to release new Llama 3 AI models next week, as it looks to reclaim top spot

What happened: Meta is releasing the smaller versions of its latest Llama 3 series AI models next week, followed by the release of the biggest model in the summer, reports The Information.

America’s next top model: Meta’s Llama 2 series were the top-performing open-source AI models until recently. However, models like those from French startup Mistral have outperformed Llama 2 in recent months. Meta will look to reclaim the open-source crown with its latest release.

Open-source models have also been catching up to leading models like OpenAI’s GPT-4 in recent months, increasing their appeal to users.

So what? Many of the top AI models like GPT-4 and Anthropic’s Claude series are closed, which critics claim lack transparency and trust. Some industry experts predict that customers (both enterprise and consumer) will increasingly move to open-source AI models to safeguard their data.

With the upcoming launch of the Llama 3 models, Meta will look to position itself as the open-source AI model of choice once again.

Planning your career can be overwhelming. There are a million different paths you can take, and there’s no way to know for sure where your current path leads you. Take some of the sting out of planning your career by trying the prompts below:

Understand what your current options are: “The following is a description of what I do and where I am in my career. Act as an expert career advisor and create a list of possible career options: [Give details about your career].“

Understand the pros and cons of each path: “The following is a description of the career path I want to take. List the pros and cons of this path: [list your career choices]”

Craft a better path to your career goals: “In 5 years, I want to [describe your career goals]. I am currently [describe where you are in your career]. Create a 5 year career plan that will help me get to my goal.”

Pursue an alternate career: “I am a [describe your profession]. I am looking to pursue a different profession. What are some alternate careers I can pursue with these skills: [list your current skills]”

Please remember: ChatGPT is a chatbot and it’s prone to occasional inaccuracies. Take its responses as suggestions to consider — not a bulletproof recommendation that can’t go wrong.

Google’s Gemini 1.5 Pro can fit nearly 10 copies of “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” — or about 1 million tokens — within its context window, according to LinkedIn user Eduardo Viteri.

That’s far more than competitors’ models: Claude 2.1 comes in second place with about 200,000 tokens, or roughly 1.95 Harry Potter books.

Tokens refer to the words that AI models can process at the same time. In general, the larger the context window, the more a model can understand syntax and other nuances of language.
