New research suggests AI isn’t replacing jobs

Losing your job to AI might seem inevitable if you’ve been following the news lately. But a recent research paper by European economists suggests the opposite.

A group of researchers at institutions like Oxford University, The European Central Bank, and many others looked at job market data from 2011-2019 to analyze the impact of the first AI boom.

Their research revealed that industries where AI could be most useful did not see a dip in employment. In fact, white-collar jobs (supposedly prime targets for AI automation) saw a 5% boost in employment.

The researchers said that these conclusions supported the idea that technologies like AI can increase the demand for skilled workers.

Harvard brings AI to its classrooms

Harvard University is introducing an AI chatbot similar to ChatGPT as a teaching resource in one of its largest courses, CS50. Their goal is to emulate a 1:1 student-to-teacher ratio and support individual learning styles.

This chatbot will support students by offering feedback, debugging help, and assistance in troubleshooting code errors. Unlike ChatGPT, the CS50 bot will guide students towards solutions instead of simply providing answers.

CS50, along with its new AI support, is offered online at no cost via Harvard University and edX.org. According to their website, more than 4.8 million students have enrolled in the course to date.
