Sam Altman in talks to raise billions for new venture, as OpenAI CEO looks to reduce dependency on Nvidia

Semiconductor chips are the secret spice that power the world’s leading AI models and Sam Altman wants more of them. The OpenAI CEO is reportedly in talks with multiple investors and manufacturers around the world to set up a network of chip fabrication plants.

Bloomberg and the Financial Times report that the move is designed to reduce OpenAI’s dependency on Nvidia chips, which are currently in short supply. Nvidia’s chips can cost as much as $30,000 a pop — and companies need thousands of them to train their AI models.

While OpenAI attracts most of the spotlight, Nvidia has so far been the runaway winner of the generative AI boom. The chip manufacturer builds the graphics processing units (GPUs) that power the world’s biggest AI models — including OpenAI’s GPT-4. The company has seen its market cap roughly triple and reach almost $1.5 trillion in the past year, making it the 6th biggest company in the world today by market cap.

If Altman’s move succeeds, the benefits could go beyond the immediate advantage of reducing OpenAI’s dependence on Nvidia. According to one estimate, it costs Nvidia $3,320 to make an H100 chip — that’s a lot of profit Nvidia is pulling in from its customers when you take into account the $30,000 retail price. OpenAI could potentially cut its chip costs by more than half if Altman can replace Nvidia’s supply with his own chips.

Scientists unlock secrets of imagination and memory formation with AI

New advances in AI are helping scientists read our brains (well, sort of). Researchers at University College London’s Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience used an AI model known as a generative neural network to find how memories help us remember, imagine and plan.

The AI model featured networks representing the hippocampus and neocortex parts of the brain to understand how both areas interact with each other. The researchers found that instead of remembering events with complete accuracy, our brains imagine the past based on concepts, combining some stored details with our expectations about what might have happened.

According to the study, this process helps our brains pick up on patterns from past experiences that can be used to make future predictions. Extremely handy in situations where we use past patterns to make predictions about the future that help us avoid danger, find food and so on.
