Welcome back, Superhuman

Back in 2010, Steve Jobs couldn’t have guessed it’d take 14 years to redesign Apple’s Mac Mini — and that it’d be packed with AI capabilities. In today’s newsletter, find out why Apple thinks now is the time to roll out its smallest-ever desktop computer.

Everything we know about OpenAI’s “Strawberry” project

Source: Sam Altman

It started innocently enough with a photo of Sam Altman’s garden. But almost immediately, in-the-know X users realized the image featured five strawberries — a cryptic sign that OpenAI’s next model, codenamed “Strawberry,” could be coming soon.

What’s “Strawberry”? In November 2023, rumors began circulating that OpenAI was working on a project then known as Q that could plan ahead and conduct deep research on its own, getting us one step closer to AGI. Recent reports suggest that initiative has since been renamed with the “Strawberry” moniker.

There are some hints about what’s in store: The most tantalizing piece of information might be a mysterious new LLM that appeared out of nowhere on the Lmsys arena — where users can test out different chatbots and rank their capabilities.

Known only as “anonymous-chatbot,” the LLM seems to be part of the GPT-4 family. While not leaps and bounds ahead of the competition, testers said it could solve tricky math problems that even GPT-4o isn’t able to figure out. It could be an in-between model to hold us over until GPT-5’s eventual release.

The pressure’s on: Three executives recently stepped away from OpenAI, and only three of its 10 founding members remain at the startup. Meanwhile, speculation about GPT-5 is only adding to the US government’s concerns about such an advanced model being released to the public.

Reading the tea leaves: Will OpenAI’s next release be GPT-4.5, GPT-5, or something else entirely? No one can be sure. The startup revealed that its next flagship model won’t be a part of its upcoming DevDay events, scheduled for October. But by all indications, something’s coming soon. In the words of Altman, “I love summer in the garden.”

Apple’s smallest desktop computer is optimized for AI

Source: Nextpit

A lot has changed since 2010, when skinny jeans were all the rage, Facebook was the go-to social network, and shows like “Glee” and “Jersey Shore” ruled the airwaves. It’s also the last time the Mac Mini got a complete overhaul.

That could finally change this year, with Bloomberg reporting that a new redesign will make the Mac Mini Apple’s smallest-ever portable desktop computer. How small, exactly? Well, put it this way: If you also own an Apple TV box, you might start getting the two devices mixed up.

But just as exciting is what’s loaded inside:

  • The new computer, set to be released later this year, will feature the M4 chip, which is optimized with an advanced neural engine for AI tasks

  • The performance boost will let users train new models on-device, transcribe text in real-time, translate videos into different languages, and edit clips and images with AI assistance

  • Not to mention, M4-powered devices will eventually be packed with long-awaited Apple Intelligence features, like a revamped Siri and AI-assisted summaries and proofreading

It could be an ideal compromise between portability and performance: It’s small enough to tuck away behind your monitor, but powerful enough to keep developers and creators plenty busy.

Everything else you need to know today

  • Crowd-Sourced Security: Anthropic announced it’s expanding its “bug bounty” program, which rewards coders for finding flaws in its AI safety systems.

  • Joining Forces: The AI-powered voice startup SoundHound has acquired Amelia AI — a company that helps users build custom AI agents — for $80M.

  • Mirrored Milestone: Speaking of AI agents, Reflection AI, which was founded by a pair of former DeepMind employees, received new funding from Sequoia at a valuation of $100M.

  • AI Arsenal: Oculus VR founder Palmer Luckey’s defense startup Anduril has raised $1.5 billion to build “tens of thousands” of AI-powered weapons systems.

😄 One Fun Thing: Can an AI-generated cookie recipe compare to one created by humans? America’s Test Kitchen asked ChatGPT and DishGen how to bake a perfect chocolate chip cookie, then compared the results to its own recipe. The AI-generated ones ended up being “pretty good but a little boring,” while the Test Kitchen’s had more complexity thanks to brown butter and other unique additions.

🏓 Even More Fun: Just in time for the Olympics, DeepMind has created a robot that can beat intermediate players at table tennis. It’s a big achievement: In order to win, the AI has to plan ahead and make subtle strategic decisions in real time.
