Ancestry.com is giving thousands of Black Americans a new portal into their history

Source: Ancestry

Celebrated author and civil rights activist James Baldwin is credited with the quote: “If you know whence you came, there are absolutely no limitations to where you can go.” But learning about our roots doesn’t always come easy. That’s especially true for Black Americans, who have been left out of some ancestry databases because there are fewer records chronicling their family history — or, in other cases, those records have been destroyed.

That’s starting to change: Ancestry.com recently used AI to scrub 38,000 newspaper articles from the 18th and 19th centuries for the names of enslaved people. It’s not the first time genealogists have collected American newspapers to study Black history. But Ancestry’s approach will make these records more accessible to the general population, letting users easily find information with an AI-powered search engine.

How does it work?

  • Roughly 183,000 people are named in the new database; families can search for them by city, county, state, and year

  • They’ll be able to uncover information like their ancestor’s one-time location, occupation, and relationships

  • In rarer cases, news clippings might have more in-depth information about someone’s life, like accounts of them escaping slavery or being recaptured after a period of freedom

  • Families will be able to then pair that information with the 18 million records Ancestry has already digitized

Why it’s important: Genealogists say that while the process can be painful for some, using the new platform could help fill in gaps in family trees, giving families important clues and context about their ancestors. Archivists are also starting to experiment with using conventional chatbots to supplement their research. For example, ChatGPT can help you translate a document written in a foreign language, generate a family tree, or even condense a loved one’s interview transcripts into a cohesive narrative.

How to use AI to find and create trending posts on LinkedIn

Creating a trending post on LinkedIn comes down to two key things:

  • Understanding what type of content performs on LinkedIn

  • Applying the learnings to create your own trending posts

Here's how to find what type of content is performing:

  • Go to the Taplio website and sign up for a free trial

  • Once you're logged in, go to the bar on the left and click on “Viral content”

  • Browse the posts and apply filters to understand what content is performing well

Once you have an idea you want to write about, it's time to do the actual writing:

  • Go to the bar on the left and click “Write a post”

  • In the text box on the right, write a draft of your post (or even a first line) and click on the purple bolt icon

You'll get a drop-down menu, where you can do everything from generating the rest of your post to improving your writing.

Once you're done you can schedule your post by clicking on Add to Queue and voilà!

Source: UIs created with Galileo AI

  • Go to Galileo’s website and log in with your account.

  • Skip the payment plan page in the top right corner and you’ll be redirected to the main page where you can design UIs.

  • Now, ask Galileo to convert your image to UI or explain the UI design in the prompt box using text.

For instance, use the prompt:

“A portal for an online academy where tutors teach different subjects related to Science”

  • Wait for a few seconds and you’ll get stunning UIs for each screen separately.

  • You can edit them in Claude by clicking on the edit button at the bottom of each design. Open them in Figma to create a prototype and even export the code.

AI companies are vying for our attention

Source: Bessemer Venture Partners

The popular Character AI platform lets you interact with chatbots that have been programmed to have unique personalities and backstories. But users noticed something strange about the app after a recent update. It seemed to them that their AI companions had suddenly gotten “boring.” Their once-thrilling conversations now seemed more repetitive.

Those complaints are a testament to how far AI startups have come in being able to capture our attention. Character AI’s success portends a future where we spend just as much time on AI platforms as we do social media. A recent analysis from the private equity firm Bessemer Venture Partners shows that’s already starting to play out.

With 2.5 billion monthly visits, OpenAI’s ChatGPT now sees more traffic than Discord and Reddit, and it’s neck-and-neck with Elon Musk’s X. Facebook still holds the lead with 16 billion monthly visits. But its parent company Meta has invested heavily in AI, with Llama-3 becoming one of the industry’s leading models.

And while some AI startups have focused exclusively on partnerships with businesses, X and Meta have instead begun rolling out AI features on their sites that are designed for everyday consumers. The trend suggests that social media and AI platforms could one day blur together. Bessemer thinks that by 2030, the top three slots in the attention economy will be held by businesses that have their roots in AI technology.
