Welcome back, Superhuman
It’s far from rainbows and butterflies in AI today as a new study reveals some serious implications for AI and personal safety. And New York Mayor Eric Adams raises an eyebrow or two as he tells reporters that he used AI to mimic his voice in thousands of messages sent to residents.

AI SAFETY
New research finds ChatGPT and major AI models can guess personal details from anonymous texts
A group of researchers that tested AI models from OpenAI, Google, Meta, and Anthropic found numerous instances where AI models that were fed seemingly benign data were able to accurately infer a person’s race, location, profession and other personal information.
“Our findings highlight that current LLMs can infer personal data at a previously unattainable scale,” the study’s authors wrote. They further noted that models were able to accurately infer private information from public posts with an 85% to 95% accuracy.
In one example, one of the paper’s authors observed that AI models were able to detect that the person who wrote a text was Black simply by noting that they lived near a restaurant in New York, and cross-matching that with population statistics in that area.
If the findings are true, they could have serious implications for online security, as scammers and hackers could feed AI models with publicly available texts and social media posts to find personal details about their targets.

AI IN POLITICS
New York Mayor Eric Adams sparks outrage with confession he uses AI to speak in different languages

While most people and policymakers are afraid of criminals using AI to create deepfakes of politicians, New York Mayor Eric Adams recently said that he’s been using AI to create deepfakes of, well, himself.
The mayor told reporters that recent robocalls with his voice promoting city hiring events in languages such as Spanish and Mandarin were made with AI. The calls did not reportedly disclose that they were generated with AI or that the mayor does not speak these languages.
“People stop me on the street all the time and say, ‘I didn’t know you speak Mandarin, you know?’” said Adams.
A watchdog group called Surveillance Technology Oversight Project in New York criticized the move as “unethical“ and “Orwellian“.
As AI gets more widely adopted and deepfakes become more realistic, policymakers are concerned about how these deepfakes can affect personal safety, disinformation, and other important policy matters.

RESEARCH ROUNDUP
AI deciphers ancient Herculaneum scroll text for the first time
Source: UK Photo
A 21 year old student made a computer program that can read old Greek script from a scroll buried when a volcano erupted in 79 AD. This cool AI program might help us find and read old artifacts and learn more about ancient people and their lives.
AI models can analyze thousands of words at a time. A Google researcher has found a way to increase that by millions.
Ring Attention — a cutting-edge method allows AI models to evaluate millions of words at once, significantly increasing data processing capabilities beyond the existing 75K token maximum. This technique, developed by specialists at UC Berkeley, Databricks, and Google, works beyond the limitations of GPU memory by sharing data around a GPU ring. It holds revolutionary potential for managing large projects, such as lengthy films or whole codebases.
