Welcome back, Superhuman

Elon Musk's latest spectacle had it all: Autonomous cars, humanoid bartenders, and flashy drone arrays. But as the curtain falls on Tesla's “We, Robot” event, the tech world is divided on whether we witnessed a preview of tomorrow or just an elaborate illusion.

1. Anthropic CEO gives a glimpse into the future: Dario Amodei, CEO of OpenAI rival Anthropic, dropped an essay last week predicting how AI will change the world. Predictions include AI smarter than Nobel prize winners by 2026, cures for almost all diseases, increased human lifespans, and more.

2. Apple tests whether LLMs can really think for themselves: Is OpenAI o1 really the first LLM with “reasoning” capabilities? A new Apple study suggests models can’t truly solve problems on their own quite yet. The researchers found that changing just a single word or number in a prompt could change responses by up to 10%, proving that LLMs still generate their answers based on patterns in training data — rather than logic alone.

3. Wikipedia’s AI hunters: Wikipedia’s moderators have a hard enough time editing the site’s 63 million articles. Now, AI has added a new wrinkle. One recent entry described an Ottoman fortress that appears to be entirely made up. A volunteer group called the WikiProject AI Cleanup is banding together to take these fictional entries offline. They rely on their intuition since AI detection software is notoriously unreliable.

FROM THE FRONTIER

Tesla’s Cybercab event divides the tech world

Was Tesla’s flashy “We, Robot” event a rare glimpse into the future — or just an elaborate sleight of hand? That depends on who you ask.

Elon Musk’s primetime showcase was heavy on theatrics:

  • Guests rode self-driving Cybercab prototypes through LA’s Warner Bros movie lot

  • A sci-fi-inspired Robovan rolled onto the stage as aerial drones lit up the sky

  • A fleet of Optimus humanoid robots poured drinks and chatted with attendees

But some in the AI community are urging caution: They say Musk gets credit for envisioning what an AI-powered world might look like in a decade or two, but he didn’t quite explain how to get there. We learned that the Cybercab will cost less than $30,000 — and that production will begin no later than 2027. But otherwise, the presentation was relatively light on details. Safety experts, meanwhile, are calling for more transparency and testing before driverless cars become a part of our daily lives.
