THE BIG INSIGHT

Tesla’s $300 million AI supercomputer comes online to power the future of self-driving cars

Tesla is reportedly switching on one of the world’s most powerful computers this week, with $300 million worth of Nvidia’s premium H100 AI chips powering the computing beast.

This new machine will enable Tesla to process a mountain of data from its vehicles to develop and improve Full Self Driving (FSD). The technology will help Tesla deliver new features and improve current ones to help their cars do some impressive things like:

  • Recognize traffic lights

  • Understand road signs

  • Change lanes automatically

  • Park the car automatically

  • Drive autonomously on roads without a human driver

The computing cluster will consist of Nvidia’s latest and greatest H100 GPUs, which cost about $40,000 per chip and it’s designed for high-performance AI workloads like video training.

But Tesla is just getting started. With AI chips in short supply, the company plans to spend over $1 billion to develop its own supercomputer called Dojo.

Top Gun — AI-powered drone beats champion AI pilots

A group of researchers from the University of Zurich pitted their AI-powered drone pilot against 3 champion drone pilots — and beat all of them. The drone’s piloting tech is called Swift, and it was developed over years of machine learning and testing drones against amateur human pilots.

You can learn more about the technical details in the university’s blog here.
