1. Two surprise releases challenge OpenAI’s lead: First up, Chinese tech giant Tencent just launched Hunyuan-T1, a reasoning model that blends “speed, accuracy, and efficiency,” while beating GPT-4.5 and o1 across multiple benchmarks. Meanwhile, a startup called Invisible says it studied how human teams work together to create a multi-agent system that scores 93% on the Mind2Web benchmark (which measures how well AI can navigate the web), compared to Operator’s 71%.

2. Startup releases cutting-edge atomic generator: VantAI, which has backing from major pharma companies like Johnson & Johnson, just unveiled Neo-1, the first-ever model “to decode and design the structure of life.” It’ll use AI to spot useful proteins already embedded in our cells and repurpose them to fight diseases. It’s more versatile and efficient than DeepMind’s AlphaFold 3, too, since it can predict protein shapes and create molecules at the same time.

3. Gmail search gets an AI overhaul: Alphabet is bringing Gmail into the 21st century with a new feature that uses AI to surface emails in order of relevance instead of date. From now on, when you type a word in the search bar, the platform will take things like most-clicked emails and frequent contacts into account before surfacing its results. Other Gemini upgrades include the ability to quickly add events and meetings mentioned in emails directly to your calendar.

Perplexity wants to acquire TikTok

Some folks accused Perplexity of attempting a publicity stunt when the news first emerged a few weeks ago, but it seems like the AI-powered search startup is actually serious about acquiring TikTok.

The skepticism is understandable. TikTok reportedly did north of $20B in revenue last year while Perplexity is currently reportedly trying to raise $1B in funding at an $18B valuation. But that doesn’t seem to be stopping Perplexity from launching an audacious attempt to acquire the social media giant.

In a proposal published recently, Perplexity outlined the following plans for the acquisition:

• Perplexity wants to rebuild TikTok’s recommendation algorithm in the US

• The infrastructure would be developed and maintained in US data centers to align with US regulations

• Perplexity plans to add features like AI citation capabilities and combining Perplexity’s answer engine with TikTok’s video library

The proposal seems audacious, but it could be one of the biggest shocks in the industry’s history if Perplexity manages to pull it off.
