TODAY IN AI

Robots are learning how to perform medical procedures by watching surgery videos. Source: Johns Hopkins University

1. Math whizzes wanted: Research group Epoch AI is inviting the world’s top mathematicians to try out its brutally challenging FrontierMath test — the same one that OpenAI’s new o3 model scored 25% on. The idea is to get a better snapshot of how well LLMs stand up to human competition when it comes to PhD-level problems. If even professional number crunchers can’t keep up with o3, it could lend credence to the idea that we’re approaching AGI.

2. AI could be fueling America’s productivity boost: Productivity among American workers — how much work they get done compared to how many hours they work — has been on a steady rise of 2% or more for the last five quarters in a row. Now, economists are trying to figure out whether AI is partly responsible. One materials distributor told the Wall Street Journal he slashed product shortages by 95% by using AI to automate his inventory.

3. Robots can now teach themselves how to perform surgeries: In a first-of-its-kind experiment, researchers at Stanford and Johns Hopkins taught robots how to perform medical procedures on their own. Their method: Letting the robots binge-watch hours of surgery footage. The robots managed to not only mimic tasks like tying knots and cleaning wounds — but also learned to fix their own mistakes on the fly. Self-taught robots could one day fill a healthcare gap, with the US facing a shortage of up to 20,000 surgeons in the next decade.

4. Keeping an eye on AGI: In a new blog post, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says “We are now confident we know how to build AGI.” He even added that OpenAI is “beginning to turn our aim beyond that, to superintelligence in the true sense of the word.” While there are still ongoing concerns about current AI limitations and safety risks, these milestone developments could change the game – but will they have to change their name?

FROM THE FRONTIER

What to expect at CES this week, from mini AI computers to Nvidia’s next chip

This year’s CES will be all about AI. Source: Skift Meetings

The title of Samsung’s upcoming CES press conference might as well be the motto for the entire convention this year: “AI for all: Every day, everywhere.” From cars to washing machines to emotional support robots, AI is coming to just about every tech product. Here’s what to expect.

Nvidia’s new chip: Nvidia probably has several major announcements up its sleeve, but the one that has fans most excited — a new GPU that could help everyday users run AI locally on their own devices for the first time.

Mini AI PCs: Microsoft is expected to give Apple’s Mac Mini a run for its money with a slate of new AI PCs small enough to sit next to your desktop, yet powerful enough to run Copilot, Recall, and other AI tools.

AI gadgets and glasses: We might get a closer look or even a release date for Alphabet and Meta’s upcoming wearables. Not to mention, startups like Nutrix and Dexcom could show off smart rings that can monitor your stress, glucose levels, blood pressure, and more.

Everything else: Expect to hear more about humanoid robots, “holographic windshields,” and AI-powered appliances at the event. The livestream will kick off this afternoon, with Nvidia’s highly-anticipated keynote scheduled for 9:30pm EST.

🚗 Auto Alliance: Nvidia announced it’s teaming up with AI voice recognition startup Cerence, whose conversational AI platform is already used in around 500,000 cars. The deal lifted Cerence’s stock by 66%.

🎤 Song Settlement: Anthropic agreed to start paying licensing fees after music publishers accused the company of sharing their artists’ lyrics — including lines from Beyoncé and Maroon 5 — without attribution.

🥕 Grocery Run: Samsung’s AI-enabled fridges will soon let you order ingredients directly from their digital screens. The appliances can also automatically add items to your shopping cart as soon as you start running low.

🥊 Final Blow: A US Appeals Court struck down the FCC’s net neutrality rule, which prevented internet providers from making certain websites run faster in exchange for higher fees. Critics said the ruling could hurt smaller sites by slowing down their internet speeds.

📈 Markets: Tesla finished the week out strong, closing up 8.22% thanks to an optimistic analyst report and strong sales in China. Nvidia, Alphabet, Amazon, and Meta also finished up ahead of the AI-focused CES conference. And Microsoft finished up 1.14% after announcing it’ll invest $80B in AI data centers this year — with more than half of the funds going toward US-based servers.

💰️ Funding: AI data giants Databricks and Snowflake are each vying for a year-old startup called Voyage AI that optimizes AI-powered search results to make them more accurate. And Belgium-based Swave Photonics raised more than $28M to build new AI-powered smart glasses and displays.
