Training begins at the ‘world’s most powerful supercomputer’

In about the time it takes for spring to roll into summer, xAI built from scratch what it claims is the world’s largest AI supercomputer. On Monday, Elon Musk revealed that the Memphis site is already up and running and has begun training what he expects will be the “world’s most powerful AI by every metric by December this year.”

The details:

  • Musk claims the supercluster is powered by 100,000 state-of-the-art Nvidia H100 chips

  • Former Stability AI CEO Emad Mostaque speculated that at 2.5 exaflops (meaning it can calculate 2.5 quintillion floating-point operations per second), it’s said to be more than twice as fast as the current record-holder — the US Department of Energy’s Frontier computer

  • Mostaque believes the computer would be able to train the likes of GPT-4 in just a week

  • The 785,000-square-foot facility is considered one of the largest-ever investments in the Memphis area

But it comes at a cost: Investors have poured more than $6 billion into xAI since its founding last year. Local environmentalists, meanwhile, have raised concerns about the site’s energy usage. During peak training periods, the gigafactory could need as much as 150 megawatts of electricity — the same amount needed to power 100,000 homes.

What it could be used for: Musk’s first priority might be training a new version of xAI’s Grok that can go head-to-head with OpenAI’s latest model. The site could also be used to develop new AI products for Tesla and SpaceX. Finally, it may serve as a hub for cutting-edge AI experiments.

But the news also presses on a longstanding debate in the AI community: Tech giants are betting that bigger computers will inevitably lead to more capable models — including ones that could plan for the future and solve complex equations. Some developers, meanwhile, believe we’re reaching a plateau where more compute will only lead to small performance boosts. xAI’s new gigafactory could soon provide the answer.

How to Summarize Anything and Forget Nothing

You'll likely forget 90% of the content you consume within a week. Recall summarizes online content, connects it in a knowledge graph and resurfaces it on a schedule tailored to your learning curve, helping you remember the information you care about.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Sign Up: Register for Recall to get started.

  2. Install the Extension: You’ll be guided to add our browser extension.

  3. Choose Content: Navigate to any online material you’re interested in, whether it’s YouTube videos, blog posts, PDFs, news articles, etc.

  4. Summarize: Hit the Recall button to get a summary of the content. Don’t forget to save it!

  5. Connect and Categorize: Your summaries will automatically connect to related content you add later, enriching your knowledge network.

  6. Review: Click ‘Generate Questions’ to create interactive quizzes from your summaries. Recall schedules these for review at the optimal times, maximizing long-term memory retention.

THE AI ACADEMY

How to create stunning slides using Presentations AI

  • Go to Presentations AI and log in to get your credits.

  • Now write your prompt in the prompt box. It will generate an outline for your presentation that you can edit and adjust accordingly.

  • Select the color scheme, font size, etc. from the Configure and Customize panel at the bottom.

  • Once everything is set, click on Create Presentations.

  • Wait for a few seconds and you’ll get your presentation ready to be downloaded.

  • You can add animations, themes, templates, and much more to your deck once it’s been generated.

For this example, I have used the following prompt: Create a presentation on the topic ‘How AI is transforming the healthcare industry’

AI & GAMING

How AI helped craft the new NCAA football game

Source: EA Sports

When gaming giant Electronic Arts set out to create a new NCAA football game after an 11-year hiatus, it knew it had a monumental challenge ahead. One of the biggest tasks was creating realistic, 3-D renderings of the league’s 11,000 players. Team rosters weren’t finalized until late spring, meaning the developers only had about three months to create each player’s digital double.

That’s where AI chipped in: For the past four years, EA has been working on a set of AI tools, including one that can transform still photos into 3-D avatars. It was a perfect match for its NCAA series. “You couldn’t do this with the regular workflows we’ve done in the past,” EA Sports president Cam Weber told the Wall Street Journal.

In instances where the AI-generated doppelgängers weren’t quite accurate, real-life developers tweaked their physical characteristics manually. Next, they fed those changes back into the model, ensuring it’ll produce more accurate player recreations next time around.

How AI is shaping the industry: Creators have been incorporating basic forms of AI into their games for years. Algorithms tell NPCs (non-playable characters) how to react to players’ in-game actions. In the case of a football game, for example, NPCs can be programmed to try to tackle the player or intercept the ball.

But using AI to create video games themselves is a more controversial concept. EA’s CEO recently said he thinks 60% of game development processes could be affected by AI. Some designers think AI will let them automate routine aspects of their job, giving them more time for creativity and experimentation. Others are concerned that AI could replace them altogether, setting up a standoff that could be just as impactful as the strikes that crippled Hollywood last year.

Ad Blocking Is Not A Problem (For You)

About 42% of people block ads, and that number is rising.

But ad blocking isn’t the end–with Brave, it’s part of the equation.

Brave ads are a new breed of placements that deliver up to 15x more traffic per 1,000 impressions vs. standard display banners.
