Welcome back, Superhuman.

It’s here. After months of speculation and waiting, Elon Musk finally unveiled Grok 3, xAI’s leading new AI model that claims to be the best in the world. But is being the best enough to convince users to make the switch from ChatGPT?

1. xAI drops chart-topping model that beats the competition: Elon Musk’s AI startup just rolled out its flagship model series, Grok 3 — and it packs some serious power. Trained using an enormous 200,000-GPU supercluster, Grok 3 reportedly has 10x the computing power of its predecessor. The upgrade also comes with a host of new features:

  • Think Mode: Grok 3 double-checks its math for improved accuracy.

  • Big Brain Mode: A high-power reasoning tool for complex, multi-step problems.

  • DeepSearch: Scours both the web and X for real-time insights and summaries.

  • Voice Mode: Possibly launching next week, the feature will likely give users the option to verbally communicate with Grok.

More details on performance benchmarks and what it means in the section below.

2. Apple Intelligence is headed to Vision Pro: Apple Intelligence is reportedly coming to Vision Pro as soon as April, bringing the company's new AI features to its mixed reality headset for the first time. The company plans to roll out its suite of AI tools — including Writing Tools, Genmoji, and Image Playground — in the upcoming visionOS 2.4 software update. This marks the first major AI expansion for Apple's $3,500 headset since its launch, with developers potentially getting access to a preview version this week.

3. OpenAI makes some big moves: Hours after the Grok 3 product launch, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman crowd-sourced ideas for the company's next open-source model on X, floating options between a scaled-down o3-mini and a new phone-sized model. Altman also teased GPT-4.5 earlier in the day, saying “trying GPT-4.5 has been much more of a "feel the AGI" moment among high-taste testers than i expected!“

Grok 3 — model details and what it means for AI

Source: xAI

When Elon Musk dubbed Grok 3 the "smartest AI on Earth", some detractors brushed it off as classic Musk hype. But xAI seems to have delivered on its founder’s promise:

  • It outperformed leading models in the space — OpenAI's GPT-4o, Claude 3.5, DeepSeek V3, and Gemini 2 Pro — across multiple benchmarks, becoming the first model ever to score 1400 on Chatbot Arena. Even Grok 3-mini packed a sizable punch, either matching or beating other models on math, science, and coding benchmarks.

  • OpenAI cofounder Andrej Karpathy took Grok 3 for a two-hour test drive and according to his early verdict, Grok 3 crushes complex coding, math, and research tasks but still serves up bad jokes, hallucinated web links, and is surprisingly cautious when it comes to ethical debates and citations on X.

The implications are huge:

  • Scaling laws are alive and well. There were strong arguments put forward in recent months that throwing more data and computing power at AI models will no longer work. Grok 3 seems to have proven such skepticism wrong, with the massive 200,000 GPU Colossus supercluster powering the model to new heights. Pre-training scaling laws likely have some room to run before they hit a ceiling — an encouraging sign for the industry.

  • xAI’s rate of progress is unprecedented. Despite entering the game just 2 years ago, the company is already going toe-to-toe and beating the best. What took others years to achieve, Musk's team has pulled off in months — an ominous sign for their rivals.

But is it enough? Despite setting new records on performance benchmarks, user adoption is still an open question. ChatGPT boasts some 300 million users, many of whom have embedded the tool into their daily tasks and workflows. Grok will have to deliver a clear and compelling performance improvement on real-world use cases to justify a switch for these users.
