TODAY IN AI

1. New York Times goes to war with Perplexity: The Times is leading the news industry’s crusade against generative AI startups. After suing OpenAI earlier this year, The Times has now issued a cease and desist notice to Jeff Bezos backed backed AI startup Perplexity, demanding the company stop accessing and using its content.

2. Alphabet goes nuclear: Google has struck a deal with California’s Kairos Power to buy energy from 6-7 small nuclear reactors (SMRs) to power its AI data centers. The news follows similar moves by Microsoft and Amazon. The company hopes this will help it meet the growing energy needs of AI and cloud storage while keeping a low-carbon footprint. The first reactor should be running by 2030, with the rest online by 2035.

3. Keep your friends close, and enemies closer: Rivals Intel and AMD are teaming up to create an advisory group focused on making sure their x86 chips work well with the same software. This comes as they face growing competition from Arm Holdings, whose chip architecture is gaining traction in laptops and data centers. Along with other big names like Broadcom, Dell, Lenovo, and Oracle, the goal is to “ensure that the x86 architecture continues evolving as the compute platform of choice for both developers and customers” according to AMD Chair and CEO Lisa Su.

PRESENTED BY AE STUDIO

The agency building million-user apps and AI-powered tools

Millions of users, one live event, and an app that just... works.

That's what AE Studio pulled off for Eurovision Latinoamérica. They said, "Build us an app for millions of live users." We said, "Hold our coffee." ☕

Here's the thing: Killer apps aren't just about code. They're about getting inside users' heads and designing experiences that delight.

That's where we shine. 👋 We turn "Wouldn't it be cool if..." into "Oh, it actually exists!"

Got a wild idea? Need a wild idea? Either way, we're your people. Let's chat and cook up some digital magic.

FROM THE FRONTIER

Zyphra’s new open-source model aims to democratize Advanced AI

Source: Zyphra

Zyphra has released Zamba2-7B, a state-of-the-art small language model that outperforms leading models like Mistral-7B, Llama3-8B, and Gemma-7B. Here’s what to know:

  • Zamba2-7B delivers top-notch performance for on-device use, consumer GPUs, and enterprise applications that need powerful, compact models. It’s got 25% faster time to first token, improves token generation speed by 20%, and uses less memory.

  • The model was trained on a massive 3 trillion token dataset with a special annealing phase, it’s open-sourced under the Apache 2.0 license.

Why it matters: While larger models are generally better than smaller models in terms of performance, they’re slow, expensive, and generally don’t run on small devices like laptops and phones. Smaller models make AI more accessible and affordable for smaller companies and individuals.
